This recording presents the definitive version of Jesús Rueda’s Third Symphony, a journey towards the light in which the composer revels in the dazzling textures filled with colour and dynamism that he loves. Traversing the four elements, Fire, Water, Earth and Air, the symphony culminates in an intense musical flood of light before subsiding into a mystical abyss. Viaje imaginario embarks on a very different imaginary journey, inspired by the composer’s nighttime walks and dedicated to the memory of his much-loved teacher Francisco Guerrero.     Rueda’s music seems generally very complex. It is orchestrated quite thickly throughout; maybe even a bit gimmicky in spots (including a crank siren). However, the overall effect is good and the performances and recording are up to the usual high standards coming from Naxos. While probably not for everyone, I do recommend this to fans of big, modern orchestral music as well as anyone seeking to keep up with what is happening in parts of the globe that do not get a lot of attention here.
