He was born in San Sebastián and studied there in the Conservatory and also in Madrid with Conrado del Campo, Paul Dukas and Paul Le Flem.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) he moved to France, where continued his studies. In 1941 he was sent to a concentration camp, but he survived and in 1942 he came back to Madrid with several scholarships for studies. In 1946 he went to Bilbao, where he worked as a music teacher in the "Santa Casa de Misericordia" and as an assistant conductor in the Sociedad Coral de Bilbao. Three years later he obtained the Harmony and Composition Chair in the Conservatory of Donosti (San Sebastián), where he leaded and important pedagogical work. Lorenzo Ondarra, Gotzon Aulestia, José Mª Alberdi, Merche Isasti, Iñaki Salvador, Ángel Illarramendi, Alberto Iglesias and Ramón Lazkano, among others, where his pupils.
