Xavier Montsalvatge, who left us just over 20 years ago, is regarded as one of the most important Catalan composers of the 20th century. His first international success was the cycle Cinco canciones negras (1941), which, along with Cuarteto indiano (1952) and Concierto breve (1953), define the "Antillean" period of the composer, influenced by Caribbean music. His style evolved from an initial neoclassicism and a period of influence from French post-impressionists. He was a member of various academies and cultural institutions worldwide, earning numerous awards and distinctions.
