Cant Espiritual by Xavier Montsalvatge goes on tour

The Orfeón Donostiarra, accompanied by the ADDA Symphonic Orchestra of Alicante and under the baton of their conductor Josep Vicent, embarks on a tour on the upcoming days of December 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th, taking them through Alicante, Madrid (Ibermúsica), Zaragoza, and Barcelona (BCN Clàssics), respectively. A series of concerts featuring a program that will commence with Xavier Montsalvatge's Cant espiritual, a composition for choir and orchestra based on the homonymous poem by Joan Maragall (the score was published by Tritó Edicions in 2003). The program of this tour will be complemented by Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, featuring the voices of Erika Grimaldi, soprano; Teresa Iervolino, mezzo-soprano; Airam Hernández, tenor; and José Antonio López, baritone.

Xavier Montsalvatge, who left us just over 20 years ago, is regarded as one of the most important Catalan composers of the 20th century. His first international success was the cycle Cinco canciones negras (1941), which, along with Cuarteto indiano (1952) and Concierto breve (1953), define the "Antillean" period of the composer, influenced by Caribbean music. His style evolved from an initial neoclassicism and a period of influence from French post-impressionists. He was a member of various academies and cultural institutions worldwide, earning numerous awards and distinctions.
