The Abbey of Montserrat and the Tritó publishing house recover the collection of the Escolania masters
The Abbey of Montserrat and the Tritó publishing house have signed an agreement whereby they agree to resume the "Mestres de l'Escolania de Montserrat" collection. Father Manel Gasch, abbot of Montserrat, and Llorenç Caballero, director of the Tritó publishing house, met to formalize this agreement which, among other things, also contemplates the digitization of the volumes already published so far.
The "Mestres de l'Escolania de Montserrat" collection was born with the intention of making known and highlighting the musical work of Montserrat composers. The first volume appeared in 1930, and four more were published until 1936. After a hiatus of more than thirty years, a second stage began in 1970, which lasted until 1993. In total, the col The collection includes fifteen volumes that collect works by Joan Cererols, Miquel López, Benet Julià, Anselm Viola, Narcís Casanoves, Felip Rodríguez and Josep Vinyals.
The resumption of the collection is done with a spirit of continuity, but at the same time with the desire to update the criteria both for the selection of repertoire and for the edition itself. On the one hand, the chronological framework set by Fr. David Pujol, the head of the collection a hundred years ago, will be broadened, and which in practice was limited to authors of the 17th and 18th centuries. In this way, therefore, it will be possible to incorporate the work of the 19th and 20th century masters.
On the other hand, the new volumes want to be considered as critical editions but without renouncing practical considerations. It is about offering a publication that combines heritage value with a presentation that makes its dissemination and interpretation plausible.
